"Life is difficult...Once we truly know that life is difficult - once we truly understand and accept it - then life is no longer difficult. Because once it is accepted, the fact that life is difficult no longer matters." Scott Peck in his book, The Road Less Traveled begins with this truth which is the essence of the whole book. Eckhart Tolle commented that if you understand these first sentences you do not need to read the book.
What is my attitude toward difficulties in my life? That is a key factor in how we deal with them. We are challenged to be aware of the on going inner, negative chatter which informs our attitude toward the difficulty. Working with our attitude means paying attention to and monitoring our thoughts. The chatter that goes on in our heads is nothing more than words strung together which often are not well thought out concepts. We do have a choice, when we are attentive to what goes on within our being, as to whether we engage in negative thoughts or bring a new perspective to the difficulty we are encountering. Could one reframe the present difficulty and see it from a more positive attitude? That, too, is a challenge we face with our resistance to what is.
It is a fact that what we resist gets stronger. How do we embrace and eventually accept what life sends our way? There are many things that happen in our lives that we cannot change - weather, accidents, deaths, sickness, broken relationships, separations, losses, which are all part of the impermanence of life. If we truly recognize that life is difficult then we can more easily accept what is. There are times when we can change difficult situations and other times that is not possible. Can we recognize the difference? To resist what cannot be changed creates suffering. Most of us know that and yet we find ourselves resisting and consequently suffering. The work is to recognize that fact and then we have a choice whether we continue to resist or embrace what is. This is an ongoing process throughout life. Sometimes we are successful and other times not, however, it is not about success but rather that we stay in the process.
