SPIRITUAL GUIDANCE and LEADERSHIP PROGRAM
ALUMNI RENEWAL
Exploring Issues Around Sexuality and Spiritual Guidance.

October 10, 2009

On this day we will explore how we understand the relationship between our sexuality and our spirituality, and how these aspects of our human be-ing effect our ministry as spiritual guides/spiritual directors.

In the course of the day, we will examine our assumptions about both sexuality and spirituality and the intersection of the two Identify what we carry with us in terms of our own herstory/history and our attitudes and belief. Explore the cultural and religious messages we have received Share those parts of our own stories in a safe, respectful environment of sacred space Increase our sense of comfort and openness around issues of sexuality that sometimes emerge in a spiritual guidance relationship.

"I believe in the beauty of all things common"
"I believe in the beauty of all things broken."

January 30, 2010

These thoughts from Terry Tempest Williams drew me again into my life-long love affair with beauty. As always, I was enticed with the prospect of discovering meanings and mystery beyond my life to-date.  In our time together we will use the GIFT of time to "marinate" in beauty, experiencing beauty in word and image.  We will use the GIFT of time to locate the treasure in our own stories as well as in the larger story of which we are all a part.  We will have the opportunity to marvel at the diverse ways beauty has influenced each of our lives. Finally, we will take a look at the role beauty plays in this violent, chaotic and ultimately creative time in which we are living.

Elizabeth Toohey says of herself - My professional life began with teaching elementary school music.  I spent six years in Florence, obtaining an M.M. in musicology.  Counseling and spirituaol direction training was obtained at Aquinas Institute in Dubuque, Iowa and a Master's in theology at the then College of St. Catherine.
In 1990 I experienced collaboration through creating the Spiritual Direction Program and week-end classes that were unique and typified the diversity we had envisioned.  Most powerful for me was the experience of being part of a circle where the building of trust and the commitment to honest sharing created transformation in individual lives and in the community.

A Piece of the Pie

April 17, 2010

In today's world we hear an increasing amount of dialogue about integrating mind, body and spirit. Health care providers are integrating meditation, mindfulness and prayer as recognized modalities to assist with recovery and healing in a variety of settings and situations. And yet helping professionals continue to be trained in a specific specialty - medicine, psychology, theology. This day long workshop will examine questions about how Spiritual Direction and Spiritual Directors fit into this broader circle of health and healing. It will provide an opportunity to reflect on a number of questions including: What are the unique gifts that Spiritual Direction and you as a Spiritual Director offer? How do you know when it might be appropriate to work collaboratively with other healing professionals and what might that look like? What does our increasingly integrative culture mean for the practice of Spiritual Direction?
